Honesdale and the Stourbridge Lions

Front coverThis book relates the stories of two antique locomotives, both named the Stourbridge Lion. Part I tells of the Stourbridge Lion made in Stourbridge, England, in 1828 and brought to Honesdale, Pennsylvania, where it was the first steam locomotive to run on a commercial track in 1829.

Part II relates commemorative celebrations of the 1829 event and tells of the building of an almost exact replica of the first Lion in America in 1933 and its career afterwards.

The present volume has been enlarged and made available as a second printing by Karlyn Leslie Shedlowski, daughter of the author. Dr. Vernon Leslie was the County Historian of Wayne County during 1994. Part I was first published in 1979 by the Stourbridge Lion Sesquicentennial Corporation of Honesdale.

Honesdale: The Early Years

Honesdale cover image

Although no year can be designated as that which saw the “founding” of Honesdale, 1827 did produce considerable activity directed at bringing a village into being at the confluence of the Lackawaxen and Dyberry Rivers.

The present volume outlines the preceding land acquisitions, describes the site before it was cleared, and tells of the rapid growth of the village originally known as Dyberry Forks. Early industries, craftsmen, commercial and financial enterprises are described as are religious and civic events in the history of Honesdale before the early 1850’s.

This book contains 17 pages of illustrations of early buildings and county historians. It is a carefully written and documented study of what could be called “the dark ages” of the history of an interesting and historic community.

The Battle of Minisink

Minisink book image

The Battle of Minisink, fought on the high ground in New York State, above the Delaware River, and opposite the mouth of the Lackawaxen River, is the most dramatic event in the history of the Upper Delaware Valley. This engagement, fought July 22, 1779, was no mere frontier skirmish, but resulted in a small army of colonial militia engaged in a deadly confrontation with a body of Tories and Iroquois Indians led by the capable Mohawk Chieftain, Col. Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea).

The battle, which some have termed the bloodiest encounter of the Revolutionary War in proportion to the number of men engaged, lasted for about four hours, and resulted in the defeat and rout of the militia.

Ether Frolics

Cover by Alan D. WilcoxYou'll enjoy having a huge laugh reading the plot contrivances of this set of stories called Ether Frolics. But they all stem from some kernel of truth I have witnessed in a career of many generations. “ObamaCare” was upheld by The Supreme Court on June 28, 2012. I think this upholds a prophecy I made in one story, “Mary Smith's Little Problem,” a story I wrote in the 1960s.
